János Körmendy-Rácz, PhD
Beekeeper | Naturopath | ApitherapistJános Körmendy-Rácz, PhD, is a beekeeper, naturopath, and apitherapist with a registered clinical practice in Hungary. He has extensive experience in apitherapy, natural medicine, and bee-related sciences, combining scientific research with practical healthcare applications. He currently serves as: • President of the Hungarian Apitherapy Society • Vice President of the Apitherapy Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS) • Chairman of the Scientific Commission on Apitherapy of ApimondiaIn addition, he is the Editor-in-Chief of APIS, an international scientific journal dedicated to bee-related sciences and apitherapy. His work focuses on promoting evidence-based apitherapy, advancing international scientific collaboration, and supporting research and education in the field of bee products and human health. The regulation of apitherapy varies considerably around the world, although the ultimate objective is the same everywhere: disease prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. In countries where therapies accepted and legally practiced elsewhere are not permitted, patients seeking these treatments must travel abroad. This raises an important question: why are proven therapeutic approaches not available universally? The key issue is evidence-based medicine. Healthcare systems require reliable evidence demonstrating safety and efficacy before therapies can be widely accepted. However, the evaluation of holistic therapies differs fundamentally from the assessment of reductionist pharmaceuticals based on a single active ingredient. Natural medicinal products and apitherapeutic preparations often contain multiple bioactive components and, in some cases, cannot be standardized at the level of individual constituents. As a consequence, different methods of clinical evaluation and different ethical frameworks are needed. In the field of ethical regulation, Türkiye has been a pioneer by developing innovative approaches for the assessment of traditional and complementary therapies. From the perspective of clinical control, alternative models of evidence generation are also possible. Longitudinal approaches that evaluate the patient's progress over time, using the patient as his or her own control, can provide meaningful evidence of therapeutic benefit while respecting the complex and individualized nature of holistic treatments. The process is already underway. Using Diabetes Mellitus and Chronic Prostatitis as examples, we present evidence generated through the application of a scientifically structured "patient-as-own-control" methodology. This longitudinal approach enables the collection of rigorous clinical evidence by assessing changes in objective parameters and patient outcomes over time, thereby offering an appropriate framework for evaluating complex apitherapeutic treatments.
